Cerberus, also called Kerberos, is a famous monster in Greek mythology.

Cerberus is commonly ised material in many literature, film, and television, and other works of fiction such as anime and manga.

Introduction

The legend

In Greek mythology, the three-headed dog is the monster born of Typhon and Echidna. It is one of the best, lawful, neutral and evil existences in the ranking of monsters.

The main characteristic of the three-headed dog is of course that it has three independent and consistent heads. It is said that the hair on the body is all composed of venomous snakes. Some say that it is not the hair but the tail is made of snakes, some say that the tail is made of hundreds of snakes, and It's said to be a dragon's tail.

It should be noted that a three-headed dog does not always have three heads. In fact, in the earliest version mentioned, Hesiod's (8th to 7th century BC) Theogony, it has 50 heads, and later Pindar ) (522 BC to 443 BC) increased it to 100 heads. Although later people usually described it as having three heads, there are exceptions. In Horace's account, it had one dog head and 100 snake heads. In the record of Apollodorus, it is described as a monster with three dog heads and a bunch of snake heads on its back. The poet of the Byzantine Empire (John Tzetzes) described it as a monster with 3 dog heads and 47 snake heads on the back. Therefore, the legend does not actually give us a clear answer to how many heads the three-headed dog has. But in artistic biography, to save trouble, usually only two heads can be seen and never more than three. Only in rare cases can there be only one head. The earliest occurrence of three heads is on a cup from Laconia. This poor little guy became one of the Twelve Labors of Hercules. Because he was subdued by Hercules by pulling the chains, he was cruelly used as the prototype of the statue by future generations.

The most famous one is that it exists as a guard dog in the underworld . Although it is a monster in Greek mythology, it has a rare neutrality among monsters, preventing humans from entering the underworld and preventing other monsters from entering the human world.

Characteristics

  • Absolutely loyal to the ruler of the underworld, but will attack any invaders who invade the underworld.
  • There are several ways to put a three-headed dog into a drowsy state, such as playing music, throwing cakes or bread mixed with sleeping pills to Cerberus, and the water of the Styx can also make it fall asleep. The ancient Greeks often prepared a piece of honey cake to put into the coffin of the deceased during funerals. It was said that it was to share it with Cerberus to please it.
