Constellation
A constellation is an artificially divided sky area containing several stars used to identify and study stars. It was first used in civilizations in ancient Greece, ancient Egypt, Central Asia and other places, and the "star officials" in ancient China were also similar to it. Constellations are divisions of the celestial spheres. Stars in the same constellation are only in close proximity when viewed from the Earth, but may actually be far apart.
Ptolemy of ancient Greece divided 48 constellations, from which the modern 88 constellations were developed. Many of the images and names of constellations are derived from characters, gods, animals, etc. in myths and legends. In modern times, newly classified constellations are named after scientific instruments.
Especially in the United States, the word constellation can also refer to the 13 white five-pointed stars arranged in a ring on the first version of the American flag (representing the 13 state-level administrative divisions when the United States became independent), which has a positive meaning in American politics. So, it has been used to name American-made warships and aircraft several times in history.
