Rarity is a character in the animated series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and its derivative works, produced by Hasbro. She represents "Generosity" in the Elements of Harmony.
Rarity is a unicorn who lived in Ponyville when she was a child. She loved costume art since she was a child. As a child, Rarity worries about her costume for a school performance when her horn awakens its magic and leads her to a rock. Just when she questioned why her horn took her to find an ordinary rock, the rock was shaken open by the shock wave of the Sonic Rainboom, revealing the gems buried inside. Just when Rarity generously used these gems on props and costumes, Rarity discovered her talent, and her cutie mark appeared.
Rarity was the fourth pony Twilight Sparkle met in Ponyville. She dressed up Twilight and gave her new clothes as soon as they met. In the second episode of Season 1, while searching for the Elements of Harmony, Rarity used her tail to restore a dragon's beard, and the "generosity" in the Elements of Harmony also found its new owner. Since then, Rarity and her friends have used the magic of friendship to defeat many villains.
Rarity is a trend-chasing fashion designer and a workaholic who always likes to take in business that makes her collapse. Setting Rarity as a fashion designer is a bold attempt and breakthrough for this animated series, which brings the animation into closer contact with fashion. In the film, Rarity will occasionally show off her French to everyone.
Rarity has the characteristics of beauty lover and neat freak. She can't stand messy and dirty things, but sometimes she can bear to get herself dirty for the sake of her friends. She is usually seen wearing eye shadow and other light makeup on her face, wearing false eyelashes, curling her hair and applying a facial mask when sleeping. She hates green hair... She think it looks like weeds. If she knows a spa, there is always a specific time to go there to soak in the hot springs. Sometimes she takes her companions with her.
Lauren Faust, the character designer of Generation 4 of My Little Pony, has been a fan of ponies since she was a child. She once drew fanart of the Generation 1 ponies on DeviantArt. Rarity's character is derived from the Generation 1 pony Sparkler. Her name comes from the Generation III unicorn Rarity.
According to Lauren Faust, Rarity was originally set to represent the "Element of Inspiration", but this was replaced because it was "too difficult for children to understand".
Rarity's cutie mark is three sapphires.
Rarity has an innate talent and can use magic to find various gems buried underground. She often goes to the back mountains to mine in order to find gems to use as clothing materials.
Her sharp tongue is also another of Rarity's abilities. She is not afraid when encountering danger. She can obediently hand over the gems to the wild dogs guarding the mine with just her mouth and outbursts of resentment.
Rarity's ability to make clothes is extraordinary, and she is usually willing to share the clothes she designs with her friends. Clothes can be made to suit various people according to their personality attributes, and have been praised by top appraisers. If possible, her clothes could make a girl a model. She is also good at handiwork. In the eleventh episode of the first season, she can make a handmade bird's nest. At the same time, her social skills are very broad, and she can easily deal with the upper class society in Central City and even lead the trend. She hopes she can marry a prince and live a "happy" life.
