Introduction
Sonic likes being free and dislikes bewildering things. Although he is impatient, he also has a gentle side that will not ignore those who are in trouble. Sonic believes that life is made up of uninterrupted events and adventures. He prefers to live according to his own rules rather than the surrounding rules and common sense. He keeps his promises and doesn't betray his friends. He believes in justice and integrity. Although he can easily get carried away, no matter how critical the moment is, he is as leisurely as wind. In short, Sonic is the fastest hedgehog in history when nothing can stop him.
Conception and creation
It is generally believed that Sonic was created by artist Hirokazu Yasuhara, programmer Yuji Naka and designer Naoto Ohshima.
In April 1990, in order to sell more than 1,000,000 copies of the game; and to compete with the then video game giant Nintendo's "Super Mario", SEGA decided to abandon the original mascot Alex Kidd and design a new mascot instead. At that time, the employees of Sega's Eighth Software Development Department (AM8) started planning the new game with Naka as the leader. More than 10 different character samples were submitted at the time, including armadillos, rabbits (the idea was later used for Sega's stand-alone character, Ristar), wolves, and a bearded figure resembling Theodore Roosevelt in pink pajamas and glasses (this design was joked about by Sega insiders, but was later used as the base figure for Dr. Eggman), etc.
In the final vote within Sega, the "Mr. Harinezumi (ハリネズミ)" character designed by Naoto Oshima was widely recognized by everyone. Yuji Naka decided to name him Sonic. So Sonic became Sega's new mascot, his shoe buckles were based on Michael Jackson, his shoe color was based on Santa Claus, and his personality was inspired by future President Bill Clinton's "get it done" slogan. Yasuhara felt like Sonic embodied the modern sensibility of wanting to get things done right away, taking credit for one's own mistakes rather than letting them linger. According to Naka, the blue color on Sonic's body also symbolizes his character traits of peace, trust, and calmness. His signature speed is based on Super Mario Bros.' World 1-1. As Naka stated in Nintendo Power #260, "I kept getting to this level as fast as I could, which inspired the original concept - Sonic the Hedgehog". Sonic was incapable of swimming because of Naka's erroneous assumption that "hedgehogs couldn't do it".
AM8 officially changed its name to Sonic Team, and was responsible for the development of the game. The game's music was produced by Masato Nakamura of the famous Japanese pop group Dreams Come True. Sega also sponsored the group's "Wonder 3" tour, painted Sonic on the tour bus, and distributed brochures promoting the game, showing footage of the game on stage ahead of its release.
The original concept offered Sonic fangs and put him in a band, with a girlfriend named Madonna. However, a team at SEGA of America, led by Madeline Schroede, "softened" the character for American audiences by removing these elements. This prompted heated questions from Sonic Team. Later, Yuji Naka admitted that it was probably for the best. Sonic's precise age, weight, height, and other physical characteristics vary according to the continuity in which he appears and the style in which he is drawn. In the video game, Ohshima's original design for Sonic consisted of spikes, a round body, and no visible iris. This design is shown on the packaging for the original Sonic the Hedgehog game by Akira Watanabe, and most subsequent games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series featured a similar design. It wasn't until the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Mega Drive (Genesis) that Sonic's body proportions changed. The original 1:2 head height ratio was changed to 1:2.5.
Beginning with 1998's Sonic Adventure, Sonic was redesigned by Yuji Uekawa to be 15 years old, with a longer build, smaller spheres, drooping quills and emerald green eyes. In subsequent games, further changes to the character design were made, namely in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic Unleashed, visible fur was added, giving the human world a more realistic design and making Sonic a bit sluggish. All of these video game designs feature comics and animation, with limitations set by standardized model sheets.
Powers and Abilities
- Super Speed
- Sonic's ability, without a doubt, is the ability to move at very high speeds. Sonic can run faster than the speed of sound, or he can control the distance he runs to avoid incoming enemy attacks. "Light Speed Attack" even allows him to run directly at the speed of light. His speed while flying (super form) is as fast as running. He can use this ability to directly ram enemies into pieces. Of course, the speed with which his legs are swung allows him to kick the enemy hard, painfully.
- Chaos Emeralds
- Sonic can use the power of Chaos to increase his attack type, and collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds transforms him into a super form - a god-like being. Super Sonic is able to fly, breathe underwater, launch particle beam attacks, dash over enemies, lift overweight objects and even be invulnerable. He himself can also detect the power of Chaos to collect the Chaos Emeralds.
History
Early years
Details of Classic Sonic's early life are unknown. According to official information, Sonic was born in a place called Christmas Island. However, this Christmas Island has never been featured in any Sonic works. Sonic, who loved adventure, decided to leave his home and use his speed to run around the world. However, Sonic met an evil scientist named Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. Robotnik always used the robots he built to capture small animals everywhere and transform them into robots, dreaming of building his own "Eggman Empire". A fierce battle between the two began, with Sonic having to stop Eggman's ambitions.
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
In order to carry out his evil mission, Dr. Eggman has invaded South Island to obtain the legendary Chaos Emeralds! To make matters worse, the mad scientist caught innocent critters and used them to power up his mechanical creations!
In this way, the colorful areas on South Island were invaded by his mechanical army, and the dangers were all over the place! Help Sonic save his little animal friends and don't let the Chaos Emeralds fall into Eggman's hands!
Sonic CD
In Sonic CD, Sonic originally planned to travel to Little Planet, but before he could enter it, Sonic saw the once-beautiful world imprisoned under a twisted metal casing. And the person responsible was Dr. Eggman. He arrived to obtain the Time Stones, so that he could soon have the ability to control time! In order to stop Eggman, Sonic must use the power of Little Planet to travel through time and destroy Eggman's machines.
When Sonic arrived on the planet, he met a hedgehog girl named Amy Rose. Amy was brought here by a fortune card that said "Fateful Encounter". Amy quickly believed Sonic was the person predicted by the card. Unexpectedly, Eggman's robot Metal Sonic kidnapped Amy, and she asks Sonic to fight him. In the end, Sonic defeated Metal Sonic, rescued Amy, thwarted Eggman's plans again, and used the Time Stones to restore Little Planet to its original state.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
As usual, Sonic embarks on a journey in his beloved biplane, the Tornado, in pursuit of freedom. On the way, he discovers the lush, green West Side Island, where he meets Miles "Tails" Prower, the two-tailed fox. The weak Tails admires the confident Sonic and begins to follow him. At this moment, the evil genius scientist Dr. Eggman is about to invade West Side Island. According to legend, the 7 mysterious "Chaos Emeralds" are on this island. Eggman intends to snatch these Chaos Emeralds and use them to create the ultimate weapon, the "Death Egg", and conquer the world. Eggman leads his mechanical army and begins wreaking havoc. Sonic steps up to thwart his ambitions, and Tails follows. Can Sonic prevent Eggman from making the "Death Egg"? Sonic and Tails' adventure has now begun!
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
In Sonic 3, Sonic and Tails, who tracked Dr. Eggman, rushed to Angel Island, and before they could gain a firm foothold, the Chaos Emeralds they were carrying were stolen by a red echidna named Knuckles. It turns out that before that, Eggman fled to Angel Island and tricked Knuckles, saying that Sonic and Tails wanted to steal the Master Emerald, and he, an "unknown mad scientist", was planning to protect it. Knuckles easily believed the lie and helped Eggman stop the two. In fact, Eggman just wanted to use the Master Emerald to launch his Death Egg again, so as to achieve his evil purpose. Subsequently, Knuckles got in Sonic and Tails' way.
Sonic's route in Sonic & Knuckles follows the plot of Sonic 3, and tells the story of Sonic's adventure on Angel Island, with Knuckles getting in his way. Later, Knuckles and Sonic finally had a fierce battle at the Hidden Palace on Angel Island. It was at this time that Eggman's true intention was revealed. He stole the Master Emerald, and electrocuted Knuckles, who came after hearing the news. Realizing his mistake, Knuckles finally decided to join forces with Sonic to take back the Emerald. In the end, Sonic retrieved the Master Emerald from the Death Egg, placing it back on Angel Island so it could float again.
In Knuckles' route, Sonic appears in the last part of the game. Here, Sonic pilots the Tornado to pick up Knuckles. Regardless of whether Knuckles got the Master Emerald or not, Sonic will appear in time to rescue him.
Sonic Adventure
In Sonic Adventure, Eggman's ambition continued. He order the mysterious life form, Chaos, to deatroy the Master Emerald, and collect the Chaos Emeralds to make himself stronger. This caused the floating Angel Island, to fall, alarming Sonic and the others. Sonic and Tails embarked on an adventure to search for the Emeralds, but later Eggman still obtained six of the seven, implanting them into Chaos and turning it into Chaos 6. Afterwards, Sonic defeated Kaos 6, and Dr. Eggman, who watched Chaos 6 being defeated, also took the opportunity to escape. Finally, Sonic finally found Eggman and defeated him. Afterwards, Sonic rested with Tails in the ruins area.
Shortly after this, Chaos, who betrayed Dr. Eggman and attacked Knuckles, obtained all the Chaos Emeralds and transformed into Perfect Chaos, nearly flooding Station Square. Before Chaos got the last Chaos Emerald, Sonic finally understood what happened to the Echidna clan. Not long after Sonic arrived in the city, Tikal finally showed up. She told Sonic that Chaos became violent because he was corrupted by an evil mind. To stop it, one must rely on those who can control the power of Chaos. Tikal decided to rely on his own mind to purify Chaos. But Sonic disagreed. He believed that using the Emeralds' energy to stop Kaos with Tikal's pessimistic attitude is ineffective. At the same time, Tails, Knuckles and Amy each picked up the 7 Chaos Emeralds that Chaos released from its body. As a result, Sonic used the energy of the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic and successfully defeated the violent Chaos.
After this, Chaos returned to his original form, and his mind was purified by the energy of the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic and the others also realized that Chaos was actually the deity of the Chao. Afterwards, Tikal and Chaos disappeared over the city together, never to be seen again. Shortly after the situation calmed down, Sonic saw Eggman driving an egg-shaped mobile cabin in the air looking at Sonic. But Eggman didn't do anything and just flew away. Sonic suspected that Eggman might have a new evil plan, so he chased after him without hesitation.
Sonic Adventure 2
In Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic decided to investigate in order to learn about the mysterious "Project Shadow". Unexpectedly, he was wanted by the government army GUN and was arrested for a time. Later, Sonic met Shadow, who looked very similar to himself, but unfortunately he was caught and sent to prison. Later, with the help of Amy and Tails, he escaped. Later, Sonic met Shadow in the forest and fought him. After that, Sonic, Tails, Amy and Knuckles, who were looking for the pieces of the Master Emerald, tracked Eggman and his party to the Space Colony ARK. On the ARK, Sonic and his team dealt with Eggman and the others many times. In the process, Sonic was almost killed by Eggman's trap. Thanks to the fake Chaos Emerald given by Tails and the activation of Chaos Control, he was able to survive. Afterwards, Sonic met Shadow again and had a decisive battle with him.
Sonic Heroes
Sonic, Tails and Knuckles received a challenge from Dr. Eggman, who claimed to rule the world within three days. The three resolutely accepted the challenge and embarked on an adventure to stop Dr. Eggman's conspiracy. During this process, Sonic and others battled Team Dark, led by Shadow and Team Rose, led by Amy. In the end, Team Sonic reunited with the other teams and discovered that the mastermind behind everything was actually Sonic's old enemy-Metal Sonic! Metal Sonic gained a new ability that allows him to copy everyone's abilities and stats. So he imprisoned Dr. Eggman, and pretended to be Sonic and kidnapped Chocola and Froggy, and framed Sonic, and then pretended to be Eggman to take advantage of the situation and obtain the others' combat data. After that, Metal Sonic became extremely powerful. Facing the powerful Metal Sonic, Sonic and the others will unite and use the energy of the Chaos Emeralds to defeat Metal Sonic and save the world!
Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic Riders series
In Sonic Racing, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles travel to the future city in search of the Chaos Emeralds. During the search, he accidentally encountered the Babylon Rogues, who were being hunted by the police. After Tails informed him that he had the Emerald on him, Sonic decided to track them down. But because the Rogues' Extreme Gear were too fast, he ultimately failed to catch up. Afterwards, Sonic and the others learned that Eggman had hosted an Extreme Gear Championship, and the Babylon Rogues they had encountered before were also among the contestants. In order to find out why Dr. Eggman held a skateboarding competition and the details of Babylon, Sonic and the others decided to participate in this competition. At the same time, the competition between Sonic and Jet also begins.
Sonic Rush series
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
Sonic and the Secret Rings
After Sonic woke up, he met a ring elf named Shahra from the world of "Arabian Nights". Shahra tells Sonic that the evil Erazor Djinn is absorbing the world of "Arabian Nights" and could endanger Sonic's world if he is not stopped. She also tells Sonic that Sonic is the "Legendary Blue Hedgehog" prophesied in legend and can stop him. So Sonic agreed to help Shahra and enter the world of "Arabian Nights" with her.
After entering, Sonic encounters the Erazor Djinn. The Erazor Djinn ordered Shahra to collect the seven World Rings for him, otherwise a curse would be placed on her. Unexpectedly, after Shahra refused, Sonic took the initiative to bear the curse for her - the fire on his chest. Once the fire goes out, Sonic dies. Therefore, in order to save the world of "Arabian Nights" and stop Erazor Djinn, Sonic and Shahra embarked on a story adventure journey to find the World Rings.
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic once again meets the challenge from the villain Dr. Eggman. Because of Eggman's cunning plan, the Earth was torn apart (with its environment intact). The angry Sonic was stimulated by the powerful laser and the side effects of the dark power hidden in the Chaos Emeralds, and turned into Sonic the Werehog. the Werehog was thrown from the spacecraft by Eggman and fell to the ground. When he fell, he accidentally scared Chip, a strange little creature that was wandering on the ground.
Chip seems to have amnesia and can't even remember his real name (Sonic came up with the name Chip after he treated him to ice cream). In order to retrieve his lost memories and help Sonic find the Chaos Emeralds so that they can be placed in the seven temples of Gaia in the broken world and restore the Emeralds to repair the world, the two embarked on a journey. Due to the side effects of the laser and emerald energy being eliminated, Sonic had to turn into the Werehog at night, but he could still maintain his original appearance during the day. While restoring the world, Sonic must also find a way to restore himself.
Sonic Colors
Eggman built an amusement park called "Egg Planet Park". Feeling some was wrong, Sonic took Tails with him to investigate. After arriving at the park, Sonic and Tails discovered that it was just a cover to capture a group of alien creatures named Wisps using the planets linked by the power generating device. These Wisps have special powers that very according to their color, and Sonic also gained a new transformation ability-Color Power due to an accidental opportunity. In order to protect them and take back the Wisps' planet, Sonic and Tails' adventure in the amusement park begins.
Sonic Generations
Sonic's friends were holding a birthday party for him. Suddenly a monster appeared and captured all their friends, including Tails. Even Sonic was no match for this monster. After waking up, Sonic found himself in a white void. When Sonic rescued Tails and investigated with him, he met his own and Tails' past selves and Tails. In order to save the world and their other friends, the two Sonics decided to join forces to travel through the Void and collect Chaos Emeralds.
Sonic Lost World
Sonic Forces
In Sonic Forces, Eggman once again wants to rule the world and invades the city center. At the moment of life and death, the survivors, including Tails, were helpless. At this time, Sonic appeared out of the blue and quickly subdued the besieging enemies. But Eggman had a trick up his sleeve. Sonic then encountered a more difficult enemy to deal with. One of them was Infinite, a new enemy capable of wielding powerful mystical powers that not even our heroes can resist. Sonic was defeated and captured. With no one to stop him, Eggman only needed a few months to successfully conquer the world.
After Sonic was captured, Eggman tortured him for several months, then imprisoned him on Null Space, intending to exile Sonic to outer space until he completely rules the world. Later, after the Resistance invaded Null Space, Sonic took the opportunity to escape from prison. As soon as he came out, he knocked down a few robots and helped the rookie (the character created by the player, so the player can decide the animal design and gender according to his preference) who came to rescue Sonic. Afterwards, Sonic reunited with the Resistance and used the Avatar as the main force to attack the Eggman Empire many times. However, in the process, Sonic once competed with Infinite.
