Tamamo-no-Mae (Japanese: 玉藻前 / たまものまえ) is a Japanese Heian-era yokai and one of the Three Great Evil Yokai.
The demon fox, originally named Zaonome, was adopted by the samurai Sakabe couple. She was proficient in music, chess, calligraphy and painting since she was a child, and she had peerless beauty. At the age of 18, she entered the palace and became Emperor Konoe's courtesan. She was favored by him and was given the name "Tamamo-no-Mae". Soon, Emperor Konoe fell ill. After finding out the truth, Abe no Yasuchika (some say Abe Yasunari), the 5th grandson of onmyōji Abe no Seimei, found out that Tamamo-no-Mae was responsible, and even discovered her shocking conspiracy to harm the emperor and steal the country. After a round of fighting, Tamamo-no-Mae was defeated and fled, hiding in Nasu. Later, Emperor Konoe sent Miura-no-suke, Chiba Tsunein and Kamisou Hirotsune, with Abe Yasuchika as military advisor, to lead an 80,000-strong army to recover. After three fierce battles with heavy casualties, he was finally defeated and killed by mounted shooting. After Tamamo-no-Mae's death, the place turned into a "killing stone", turning the surrounding area into a land of death, and the people suffered terribly. It was not until the eminent monk Gennō Shinshō in the Southern and Northern Dynasties smashed the killing stone that it was completely calmed down.
In addition, she will have mutual attachments with Inari and Kuzuha, who are also Japanese fox gods, in later creations.
