Overview
General
- Observe the Chicago Manual of Style.
Titles
- Italicize titles of a major literary work with the template.
- Put titles of short literary work in quotations with the template. Do not use quotations in article titles.
- Follow other spelling and romanization conventions outlined in this manual when they apply.
Spelling
Capitalizations
National varieties
- Follow local conventions. An article whose subject relates to the Commonwealth nations, Hong Kong, etc. should use British English spellings; those whose subject relates to the United States, etc. should use American spellings.
- Follow previous conventions. For articles not directly related to English-speaking countries and territories, follow the already-used spelling convention in the article.
- Keep spelling convention consistent throughout an article and, preferably, throughout a series.
Foreign language romanization
General
- If a different romanization or translation scheme was used already and already accepted as a convention (e.g. Shaanxi, Hong Kong, Taipei), always use that romanization.
- Keep all diacritics originally present in latin scripts.
- If a language is not in the list below, follow the English world convention.
- If the appearance of an unlisted language grow in EnMGP, or if there is a dispute about romanization conventions, open a discussion thread on the discussion board.
Chinese
- Romanize Chinese with standard pinyin with no diacritic marks and appropriate capitalization, unless
- the usage call specifically for providing pinyin; then, provide standard pinyin with standard diacritic marks
- Romanize Cantonese with Hong Kong Government Cantonese Romanisation if necessary, unless
