The Omnimatrix, also known as Omnitrix, is an invention of the Galvan Azmuth. There are multiple models spun off from the original.
Background
In order to promote friendly exchanges between civilizations and races in the universe, and to save endangered races in the galaxy, Azmuth decided to create a device that would allow users to mimic the forms of other races, thereby breaking through the barriers between races. So he developed the Omnitrix.
By the way, in the technology level classification in Ben 10 lore, the Omnitrix's level is 20 (other than that, only level 2 is legal on Earth).
Structure
The original Omnitrix basically consisted of a soft base and movement shaped like a wristband, shaped like a watch or wristband. The top of the movement is the screen (dial), and the edge of the screen is a detachable ring. In the original Omnitrix, four illuminated buttons were distributed at four points of the ring to form a square. Subsequent Omnitrix models omitted these buttons.
There is an illuminated activation button on the soft base. When worn on the user's left hand, this button faces the user. The base can automatically adjust its structure according to the user's body shape. In addition, there is a signature mark of Azmuth's genetic information underneath it. This information can be used to search for the location of another mark set by Azmuth.
Every Omnitrix has the iconic hourglass pattern on the screen, which is also present on Azmuth's base building on his home planet and is also the symbol of the Plumbers.
The Omnitrix will be "welded" to the wearer's body, and unless it's forcibly removed using special equipment or controlled separation using voice commands, there is no way to remove it without harming the wearer. However, there are no absolutes. Taking advantage of some design flaws, it can even be removed with bare hands.
Azmuth seems unable to wear the Omnitrix and can only simply hang it around his waist, but can still use all its functions.
Function
No matter what, please remember that Omnitrix users can never call upon the DNA of their own race
Original Omnitrix
The original Omnitrix appeared in Ben 10 and Ben 10: Alien Force, was snatched away by Vilgax at the end of Alien Force, and was eventually destroyed by Ben.
The first Omnitrix does not come with its own database, but is linked to the cloud built on the planet Primus. Just like online cloud services, users can upload data to Primus through the Omnitrix, or transfer data to Primus. The saved data will be deleted. Primus only receives DNA or the like from intelligent beings.
The first generation Omnitrix has four basic functions: user transformation, accessing DNA or similar, repairing DNA or similar, and language translation.
In Ben 10, the Omnitrix only allows manual operation, but no manual operation is required by activating Master Control. Ben accidentally turned on the Master Control at one point, but then turned it off again. In Alien Force, Azmuth stated that Ben will naturally learn to use Master Control when he becomes an adult.
The manual process is as follows:
- Press the start button and the movement will rise
- Turn the movement and select the DNA of the species you want to summon
- Press the movement to complete the transformation
A strong green light bursts out during the transformation. During this process, the components of the called species will be generated by the Omnitrix, spread around the user, and replace the user's original components. The manual mode has a limited time, which will automatically restore when the time is up. The limited time is generally 10 minutes, but some specific reasons may extend or shorten this time. During recovery, the reverse process is carried out to replace the user's components, and at the same time a strong red light bursts out.
Transformation and recovery are instantaneous, but occasionally there will be a gradual transformation that lasts for a long time.
When you have already transformed, you can poke the Omnitrix in a certain way to transform or restore it again, but there is no relevant information on the specific details. In the plot of Ben 10, both Myaxx and Ben (in the future of Ben 10,000) can do this, and in the plot of Ultimate Alien, Ben can also do this.
In manual transformation mode, after each transformation, the Omnitrix must be recharged before it can be used again. When charging, all functions are turned off, the screen glows red, and when the user attempts to operate it, a beep will sound to indicate that it is unusable. When charging is complete, the Omnitrix will light up green and make a beeping sound. The charging time is not fixed and is usually affected by the user's will.
After transformation, the Omnitrix will reconstruct a set of clothing for the user's transformed form based on the user's clothing, but there are a few exceptions that do not have adapted clothes, such as Wildmutt or Heatblast.
By directly touching the Omnitrix, DNA or similar from other species can be introduced into the Omnitrix, processed for about half a minute and then uploaded to Primus. Primus will identify the species' traits and if it is an intelligent creature, it will be retained, otherwise it will be deleted. During this process, the movement rotates, the screen emits yellow light, and a beep sounds when the work is completed.
In the plot of Alien Force, the Omnitrix shows the function of repairing DNA or similar. This feature requires voice commands to activate. Ben once used this function to restore the Earthlings who had turned into half-human beasts to their original state, and to repair the DNA of evolved humans.
The Omnitrix has the ability to self-destruct. The self-destruct command is issued by voice command, but sometimes some malfunctions may cause the command to be activated unexpectedly. If the self-destruction is activated, it will trigger a chain reaction that can destroy the universe, but in fact, Ben only blew up the Omnitrix after using the self-destruction command. The prerequisite for triggering a chain reaction may be a charge that lasts for several days.
The Omnitrix has special protective functions that can take certain protective measures when users encounter fatal threats. For example, in episode 18 of the original series, when Kevin was about to kill Ben, the Omnitrix completed charging in an instant, allowing Ben to transform into Cannonbolt in an emergency.
Of course, there are also situations where, in an emergency, the Omnitrix automatically selects the alien hero most suitable for the current situation and transforms the user into it.
If someone wants to use force to remove the Omnitrix, its protective function will also be activated. The Omnitrix emits a pulse of energy from its core, knocking enemies away without harming the user.
Since the original Omnitrix (before calibration) is not yet stable as a whole, it is easily disturbed by electromagnetic waves, electromagnetic pulses or special energy sources, causing the Omnitrix to enter a random transformation state. However, you can rely on the Omnitrix's automatic repair function to repair it.
Ultimatrix
The full name is Ultimate Omnitrix. It was stolen by Albedo to fight against Ben, but was later taken away by Ben.
The Ultimatrix was originally an invention of Azmuth, but because its core was incomplete, it was preserved. But it was stolen by Albedo and added a new evolutionary function. However, the Ultimatrix was still bound to Ben's DNA, so Albedo could only use Ben's aliens. But in the end, Ben destroyed the Omnitrix and took away the Ultimatrix, becoming the new user. It was taken away by Azmuth at the end of Ultimate Alien.
From the appearance, the Ultimatrix does not look like a watch, but more like a wristband. The main function is similar to that of the Omnitrix, but Albedo has added a new function to it-the ability to evolve stored aliens into an "ultimate" form. In ultimate form, the alien creatures' abilities in all aspects have been greatly improved. The principle of evolution is to allow alien creatures to evolve freely for about a million years in a simulated environment and put them in the worst possible environment. Then the DNA of the organism after evolution is detected, and then the target DNA is modified into the required evolved DNA through modification.
The Ultimatrix cannot restore the DNA of living things, nor can it restore living things stored on Primus. This ability was not added by Azmuth. Additionally, a flaw in the Ultimatrix makes it possible for its ultimate forms to gain self-awareness.
The Ultimatrix does not have the protective features that all generations of Omnitrixes have, which makes it almost impossible for users to take any emergency measures when faced with fatal threats. For example, in episode 19 of Ultimate Alien, when the evil monster violently cracked the Ultimatrix, Ben, as Brainstorm, was almost tortured by the energy pulse burst from the Ultimatrix.
New Omnitrix
This is Ben's device in Omniverse. After Ben defeated Dagon and the Ultimatrix was taken away, Azmuth handed him a new version of the Omnitrix. At that time, Azmuth believed that Ben was already qualified to take over it.
When the new Omnitrix was first given to Ben, its functions were incomplete. Ben needed to reach adulthood before he could activate all functions.
Of course, the new Omnitrix has all the features of the original. Such as voice control, gene repair and protective functions, etc., and they are even better.
The new Omnitrix will not have transformation errors. If any transformation errors occur, it is a problem with the user's settings and has nothing to do with the Omnitrix itself or its manufacturer.
The new Omnitrix does not need to use Primus to store alien DNA. It is a DNA data repository in itself.
The new Omnitrix can hold the DNA of at least 1,000,912 alien creatures, but only 99 have been unlocked, 70 have been named, and Ben has only transformed into 62 of them.
