General

1. Observe the Chicago Manual of Style.

Titles

1. Italicize titles of a major literary work with the template.
2. Put titles of short literary work in quotations with the template. Do not use quotations in article titles.
3. Follow other spelling and romanization conventions outlined in this manual when they apply.

Spelling

National varieties

1. Follow local conventions. An article whose subject relates to the Commonwealth nations, Hong Kong, etc. should use British English spellings; those whose subject relates to the United States, etc. should use American spellings.
2. Follow previous conventions. For articles not directly related to English-speaking countries and territories, follow the already-used spelling convention in the article.
3. Keep spelling convention consistent throughout an article and, preferably, throughout a series.

Foreign language romanization

General

1. If a different romanization or translation scheme was used already and already accepted as a convention (e.g. Shaanxi, Hong Kong, Taipei), always use that romanization.
2. Keep all diacritics originally present in latin scripts.
3. If a language is not in the list below, follow the English world convention.
4. If the appearance of an unlisted language grow in EnMGP, or if there is a dispute about romanization conventions, open a discussion thread on the discussion board.

Chinese

1. Romanize Chinese with standard pinyin with no diacritic marks and appropriate capitalization, unless
   1. the usage call specifically for providing pinyin; then, provide standard pinyin with standard diacritic marks
2. Romanize Cantonese with Hong Kong Government Cantonese Romanisation if necessary, unless
