Shen Bochen(1889~1920), formerly named Xue Ming, from Tongxiang, Zhejiang, was fond of painting since a child, later dropped out of school because of lingering disease and educated himself successfully. He published hundreds of political and social life cartoons intended to "criticize the manners and morals of the time" on Great Public Daily, Civil Rights Pictorials, Shen Bao in Shanghai in the early years of the Republic of China. Some of them aroused quite a sensation. In September 1918, he launched a dedicated cartoon publication Shanghai Puck. In terms of cartoon creation techniques, he paid special attention to bring into play the advantages of traditional Chinese line drawing, and also had genius for applying western black and white pen drawing techniques, to enrich the representation techniques of Chinese cartoons.
