The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya（Japanese：涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱）is the first volume of the light novel series, Haruhi Suzumiya , created by Nagaru Tanigawa and also the title of the derivative anime of its series.

Plot
Suzumiya Haruhi, in her first day of school, introduces herself as "Not interested in normal human beings" but would like to know if there's aliens, time travelers or those from a parallel world. Kyon, which is a male student sitting in front of her, has already forsake the ideas. Haruki's serious attitude towards this, however, makes him curious and he started to observe her. But a unexpected speech gave Haruhi the idea of starting a club. After being shanghaied into a mysterious club named "SOS Dan", aliens, time travelers and asters started to appear around him...
