Term Red-blue ship
Type Character pairing

A red-blue ship is a type of character pairing that happens when two characters, preferrably from the same piece of media, are paired with each other, with the one thing having in common being that one wears red clothing or is associated with the color red, and the other wears blue clothing/is associated with the color blue.

Introduction

An example of a red/blue ship is Kyoko Asakura and Sayaka Miki from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

These ships are notable because the colors red and blue are used as contrasts to each other: "red" characters usually being fierce or hot-blooded and prone to anger, and "blue" characters being calm and serene. Note that also, while setting these two colors to negative, you get similar tones of the opposite color: if one sets red layers to negative, the result is a bluish cyan tone, if one does the same with blue layers, they would get a reddish or orange tone.
