Basic Information
World Name Azeroth
World Type Continent
Governing Body Titans/Old Gods
Works Blizzard's Warcraft series

Azeroth is a fictional world in the Warcraft series created by Blizzard Entertainment, it is also the place where the series' main plots take place. In the games, "Azeroth" is a name the Titans gave to a small realm in the midst of the Great Dark. In the Titan and Darnassus languages, it means "Land of Eternal Starlight".

The people of Azeroth fought a long, brutal war against the demons and their servants, no matter when or where, blood is still spilled. After the Third Great War, three powers emerged in the world: Elemental Lords, Hordes, and Alliances. Nevertheless, other forces and organizations continue to play a big role in this stage. Although the world is ravaged by conflict, somehow through deception, betrayal, and bloodshed, Azeroth survived four invasions by the Burning Legion. However, Azeroth is still in conflict even now, torn apart by hatred and war.

Name origin and evolution

In lore, Azeroth is one of the countless realms in the Twisting Nether. This world was first dominated by the Old Gods, but after the Titans descended and defeated them, the Titans transformed the world. They named the only continent at the time "Kalimdor", meaning "Land of Eternal Starlight".

In C.S. Lewis' fantasy story "The Horse and His Boy", published in 1954, Chapter 3 mentions the word "Azaroth". The word "Azeroth" first appeared in C.J. Cherry's fantasy novel Fires of Azeroth, published in 1979. The book is the third in a tetralogy of Morgaine novels. The world in the novel's story is also called "Azeroth", and some of the plots were similar to later Warcraft stories.

In the first installment of the series, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, "Azeroth" refers to the human kingdom in the game (the current Stormwind).

In Warcraft II, the term was gradually assigned to the continent where the Kingdom of Stormwind was located (the current southern part of the Eastern Kingdoms) and to the world in the game.
