The Adventure Island series (Japanese: 高橋名人の冒険島, Takahashi-meijin no Bōken Jima) was a series of platformer games created by Hudson Soft.

Introduction

This game series is a 2D horizontal scroller/platformer series developed by Hudson Soft in the 1980s, starring Master Higgins, a caricature of real-life Hudson executive Takahashi Meijin. In the NES era, it was said to be on par with the Super Mario series. The first Adventure Island was not an original work by Hudson, but a game licensed by Hudson from Westone (the developers of Wonder Boy). In each game, the heroine, Tina, is kidnapped by a monster, and Higgins must rescue her.

Because the game could become increasingly more difficult, and early Famicom cartridges did not have a save function, people relied on their own skills to clear it.

It wasn't until the advent of Famicom emulators that the built-in files were used.

About Master Higgins

Master Higgins in Adventure Island: The Beginning

The main character of the series, Master Higgins, is based on Takahashi Meijin (高橋名人), real name Toshiyuki Takahashi (高橋利幸), who was a former employee at Hudson. At that time, Takahashi became famous for setting a record of 16 keystrokes per second, becoming a household name all over Japan. Taking advantage of the popularity, Hudson developed a game with "an animated version of Takahashi" as the protagonist.
