Contra (Japanese: 魂斗羅コントラ) is a shoot-'em-up game developed and released by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987.

Introduction

Game overview

Originally an arcade game, it was later ported to other platforms. Players take on the role of Special Forces members and fight off a vast array of enemies ranging from men and robots to aliens. On the way to battle, players can shoot down flying special targets to gain various enhancements.

The game's successful selling points include aspects such as support for two players playing at the same time and the longitudinal view of several scenarios.

Synopsis

The game tells the story of the two most powerful men on Earth, the last hope of mankind to fight against aliens.

In 2631 A.D., an unknown meteorite crashes on the island of Garga, Newfoundland. Two years later, in 2633, the Earth Marines learned that mysterious aliens were planning to destroy all of humanity. In order to prevent a tragedy from happening, the commanding officer gives "Contra" orders to two of his privates, Bill and Lance, and sends them to destroy the alien invaders and their fortress.

Some of the game's settings are derived from the classic movie "Alien".
