Introduction

Dreams are a world composed of imaginary images, sounds, thoughts, feelings, etc. produced by humans during sleep. It belongs to the spiritual world in the category of isekai.

The scenes and objects in dreams are all-encompassing, ranging from ordinary life or natural scenes (such as school teachers guiding students' homework, beach vacations, family dinners, hospital visits, etc.) to all kinds of bizarre places such as the underworld, heaven, and other things that are completely inaccessible or even non-existent in daily life. The various scenes, objects, and interactions between the dreamer and the objects in the dream that appear in these dreams are partly derived from the dreamer's subconscious, mentality, partial memories, and various people and things that he or she contacts or cares about on a daily basis. For this reason, some psychologists will try to find out the cause of the symptoms of psychological patients by asking patients about their recent or deepest dreams.

Because of the characteristics of dreams, many media have used dreams as inspiration to extend many creations, and there are also theories and inventions inspired by dreams. Some people will clarify their physical and mental state by recording dreams. In addition, people who are in a negative state of mind and body, affected by emotions such as anxiety, anger, and have experienced major trauma are more likely to dream bad dreams during sleep.

However, there are also dreamers who claim or encounter the spirits of deceased relatives and friends (or ghosts they have never met) appearing in their dreams. Some dreamers with psychic physiques have also claimed and recorded that they have traveled through dreams to the underworld, heaven, and other places where the deceased are.

Examples

  • The movie MIDA: The protagonist Mida is a dream therapist who can consciously enter other people's dreams and provide psychological counseling and treatment for them, so there is a lot of description about dreams.
  • Alice in Wonderland Series: Describes the series of adventures that occur when the protagonist Alice accidentally discovers a clothed rabbit and falls into a strange cave. It is later revealed that these events all happened in a dream.
  • Yumekui Merry: An adventure story that mainly takes place in the real world and the dream world.
  • Zero Series: The third work "Voice of Tattoo" takes place in the "House of Sleep" which can only be reached in dreams. This place is located at the junction of dreams and the underworld.
  • LSD: Dream Simulator: A simulation game with dreams as its theme, with a total of 365 dreams (each dream represents one day) to experience.
  • Hidamari Sketch: Yuno has a high fever one day in her first year. The main plot of this episode is that Miyako and others take turns to take care of Yuno, and Yuno sees various distorted scenes in her dreams with a high fever. There are also many foreshadowings that did not appear in the animation at that time.
