Yoshi is a character in the Super Mario series created by Nintendo.

Backstory

Yoshi in Shigeru Miyamoto's drafts. Mario is riding on its back.
  • Back in the development of Super Mario Bros., producer Shigeru Miyamoto envisioned that Mario could ride something. However, due to the limitations of the NES, even in the later Super Mario Bros. 3, Yoshi failed to join. However, the great leap forward of the SNES function later provided the possibility for Yoshi to join.
  • In 1990, Yoshi made his debut in the game Super Mario World. Since Yoshi's Island, he is a stand-alone playable character. Has a long tongue and can carry Mario on his back. He also is the main character of the separate Yoshi series.
  • Shigeru Miyamoto told the developers that he wanted Mario to ride a horse, and even drew Mario on a horse himself. Designer Shigefumi Hino's original concept of Yoshi was a reptile similar to a dinosaur. Takashi Tezuka modified it to be close to a turtle. The "saddle" on Yoshi's back is its shell. After constant discussion and modification, the two of them eventually created the new character Yoshi. Of course, Yoshi is neither a turtle nor a dinosaur, Yoshi's species is "Yoshi"!
  • Yoshi can swallow almost all enemies and items, trap them in eggs he lays, or spit them out. Yoshi can gain the ability to stay in the air for a certain period of time by "fluttering" on air with both feet, and Yoshi can be protected from some enemies such as thorns and black flowers.
  • In the original games, Yoshi could gain different skills by eating Koopa shells of different colors, such as spitting out three fireballs at a time, stepping on the ground, causing micro-earthquakes, and having the ability to fly indefinitely. This setting has been preserved in some subsequent works. For example, in Super Mario Maker 2, the red Yoshi has the ability to devour, which is different from that of ordinary Yoshi. It can spit out three fireballs to attack the enemy at a time.
  • Yoshi will leave the person on his back and run in one direction when he takes damage, the player needs to catch up with Yoshi and jump back on Yoshi's back to appease him, and he will calm down.

Relationships

  • Mario: Mario is Yoshi's best friend, and they have been through many adventures together.
  • Birdo: They are an official couple in the series.
