Jinriki VOCALOID (人力VOCALOID, "human-powered VOCALOID") is a method through which spoken phrases of a real-life person or character are modified to make it sound like they are singing, similar to a VOCALOID.

There is another definition of this concept: the term used for "fanmade" voicebanks which, despite the name VOCALOID, are mostly made in the software UTAU. Most of these voicebanks are recorded by the users themselves, or pick up vowel sounds of dialogue, upload them to UTAU, and tune them to become voice libraries.

However, there are times when virtual singers cannot meet the majority of the needs of netizens. Some people "want to hear their favorite characters sing!", or they "can't wait for it to be released!". Jinriki VOCALOID is there to meet that need. Using materials such as "sounds which were not originally recorded for singing" or "full songs", and adding lyrics and scales to edit and modify them. After a lot of work, the song is finally done.

Origin

On November 9, 2007, before the release of Kagamine Rin and Len to the market, Niconico user YukkiP (ゆっきP) uploaded a video called "Kagamine Rin sings "Koi no Mikuru Densetsu" (鏡音リンが「恋のミクル伝説」を歌ってくれた)，in which he edited voice clips of the characters Ami and Mami Futami from THE iDOLM@STER as if they were singing the song "Koi no Mikuru Densetsu", from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The video gained popularity, making her predominant in this new trend of "human-powered VOCALOID".

Because they are produced by individual users' editing or sentence mixing, some works may infringe copyright, so there were occasions of these videos getting deleted. A lot of Jinriki VOCALOIDs have appeared in Japan. Most of the time they are the source for memes. This type of work prominently emphasizes the neta (joke material) element of the original "voice provider" (the person or character whose speech is being edited). Example: Angry German Kid

Difference and connections with OtoMAD

Unlike otoMADs, Jinriki VOCALOID focuses more on the singing voice and the lyrics. On some occasions, OtoMADs will use Jinriki VOCALOID material.

Difference and connection with UTAU

UTAU was a tool created to support the creation of man-made voicebanks and encouraged users to create them. However, the label "UTAU" has more to do with the UTAU software and the voicebanks created for it. Jinriki VOCALOID, on the other hand, is used mainly for meme purposes.
