Introduction

Later, it was decided to name it "Tokaido Shinkansen" after "Shinkansen", the internal name of Japan's state-owned railways for the pre-war "bullet train" plan. After the Tokaido Shinkansen was put into operation, Japan National Railways (and subsequently the JR Group) also began to build Shinkansen lines connecting other large cities.
