Donkey Kong is the main character of the Donkey Kong video game series created by Nintendo.

Name origin

In the time where the original Donkey Kong game was released, the gorilla King Kong, in the movie of the same name, was arguably the most popular gorilla character in the world. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Donkey Kong, felt it was stupid that Donkey Kong kept being defeated. He looked up the word "Stupid" in an English dictionary, but confused the words "Stupid" and "Donkey". Finally, the character was given the name "Donkey Kong" after King Kong.

Introduction

He first appeared in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, where he kidnapped "Lady", the girlfriend of the main character "Jumpman" (i.e. Mario). Players needed to control Jumpman to climb up the building where Donkey Kong was in, dodge the barrels he was throwing, and save his girlfriend.

The game was well-received, and in 1983, it gained a port for the Nintendo Entertainment System, it also had two sequels. The "Donkey Kong" in this game trilogy is actually Cranky Kong, in later works, the title of "Donkey Kong" is passed down to his grandson. Donkey Kong's family also reconciled with Mario.

Donkey's most recognizable feature is a red necktie with the letters "DK" printed on it. His favorite food is bananas.
