They have powerful energy, and it is said that just one Chaos Emerald can make a civilization prosperous. It is said that Chaos Emeralds can make certain life forms very powerful, and it can bring huge energy to nuclear weapons or technology, which is also the reason why Dr. Eggman invaded South Island.

History

Sonic the Hedgehog

In Sonic the Hedgehog, they are scattered across various locations called Special Stages. Sonic came to each Special Stage in turn and took the lead in obtaining all the Chaos Emeralds in South Island. After defeating Eggman, Sonic used the energy of the Chaos Emeralds in order to restore South Island, polluted by Dr. Eggman's industrialization.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

After being defeated by Sonic, Dr. Eggman makes a comeback and controls various areas of West Side Island, such as Oil Ocean, Casino Night, etc.

In addition, after hearing that the Chaos Emeralds had come to West Side Island, Dr. Eggman decided to build the Death Egg.

Sonic once again completed all Special Stages and collected all Chaos Emeralds, but the Death Egg had already entered synchronous orbit. Sonic had boarded Eggman's jet to the Death Egg with the help of Tails' Tornado, which had been equipped with rocket thrusters. Finally, he defeated Dr. Eggman again using his Super form, and reunited with Tails.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

After defeating Eggman, Sonic and Tails discovered that the Death Egg had crashed onto a floating island, Angel Island. However, when the Death Egg crashed, Dr. Eggman had fooled Knuckles. Knuckles punched Sonic outside Angel Island and knocked him out of his Super form, and threw all the Chaos Emeralds back into the Special Stages. After collecting all the Chaos Emeralds and defeating Eggman, the game enters the Sonic & Knuckles timeline.

Powers

In the game, once the player has collected all the Chaos Emeralds, they can enter the Super state. In Super state, Sonic's fur will turn golden, and his speed will increase. Super Sonic will not take normal damage, but he will die from falling in bottomless pits, being crushed, time running out, and drowning. The only difference with the other characters is that his fur will also sparkle instead of just being gold.

And Shadow can use any Chaos Emerald to activate Chaos Control. Chaos Control allows Shadow to instantly move to any place he wants, and it can also stop time.

In Sonic Superstars, it was added that each Emerald had its own unique ability.
