HeZ (荷兹Hé Zī) is a Chinese virtual idol created by Tianjin Jingge Information Technology Co., Ltd.[citation needed] and managed by Wajijiwa Entertainment[1].

Introduction

He is an otaku, and loves eating snacks. He runs on electricity and loses power very quickly, so he eats snacks to recharge himself. He can also use his tail to recharge, as it functions similar to a cord.[2]

History

HeZ first created his Weibo account on April 17, 2017, where he publicly announced he was going to become a contestant on Tencent Video's reality show, The Coming One. He auditioned in Episode 3, and singer Hua Chenyu, who was a judge in the show, gave him a 666 (the score needed to be given a place in the competition). In episode 3 he appeared only as an illustration,[3] but in episode 6 is where he started appearing as a 3D character, animated by using motion capture technology.[4] His performance in said episode was a remixed version of Yang Mi's song "Love Provision".

In the following episodes, almost all of his performances were either remixes or covers of other songs, such as "Secret base", from the anime Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. However, in episode 12, he performed an original song titled "Just in Time to Meet You" (刚刚好,能和你遇到), inspired by the 52-hertz whale. Together with another contestant, Zhou Zhennan, he also performed a remixed version of the song "Jing Zhong Bao Guo" (精忠报国).[5] This also marked his last appearance, as he was eliminated.[6]

In the event Tomorrow's Party, held on September 26, 2020, Air League Band, winners of the fourth season of The Coming One, performed a cover of "The Summer I Spent With You" (我和你的那个夏天), featuring HeZ's vocals.[7]

Controversy

Eligibility

HeZ's appearance on The Coming One sparked a wave of criticism. Some supporters believe that the "dimension wall" should be broken, and that competitions between real and virtual singers should be accepted. Another sector believes that it wasn't fair for real singers to compete with voice synthesis software (such as VOCALOID).[note 1] Because of this many contestants threatened to quit from the show.

Popularity votes

One of the features of The Coming One is that the votes are based on popularity. Some netizens believed that the main source of popularity is the interaction between the contestant and their fans on live broadcasts. Since HeZ didn't really "interact" with the audience, it was suspected that someone might have manipulated the popularity votes to HeZ's favor.

Vote rigging

In the August 26, 2017 episode of The Coming One, Joker Xue, one of the judges, revealed that the staff directed him to vote for HeZ in order to "not let him lose too badly". When the host declared HeZ the winner of the online popularity poll, Xue asked for a break in the live broadcast, and indicated that the staff directed the vote that resulted in HeZ winning, before walking out of the studio.[8] After the incident, program director Ma Hao said there wasn't any "shady business".[9]

Impact

The debate about HeZ is very long: there were people questioning about whether 2D characters can be considered "idols".[10]

Some companies, such as Pizza Hut, have worked with HeZ as their brand endorser.[11]

Trivia

  • He has an official fan club, it is called "Power Bank" (充电宝). HeZ started calling his fans this way in this video.

Notes

  1. It is unknown whether HeZ's voice is generated using this kind of software.
