Hugh is a character in the Pokémon series developed by Nintendo.

Introduction

  • He is the rival character of Pokémon Black 2/White 2. At the same time, he is also Nate/Rosa's childhood friend.
  • He loves his little sister, and Pokémon too, but sometimes, he is short-tempered and impulsive.
  • Seems to have embarked on a journey for his sister's sake.
  • His name comes from the English word hue, meaning a tone of color.

History

Well, whatever. I'm just happy to know you're a Trainer I can count on!
  • He will first battle the player with a newly hatched Oshawott early in the game. After the battle, he'll say he wants to become stronger and head for Floccesy Ranch, a few kilometers away. However, he left in too much of a hurry, and ended up leaving something behind...
    • He left behind the town map. When the player gets the map, Hugh's sister will also give the player another copy of the map, and will ask the player to return the other map to Hugh.
You're awfully calm about this! Your Pokémon might be gone for good!

Players will then find Hugh at the Floccesy Ranch, where the new Team Plasma suddenly launches a surprise attack. Although the incident ended with the forced retreat of Team Plasma, but in the process, Hugh's performance seems to make people thing something's wrong...

  • In Virbank City, Team Plasma is back in action. Hugh seemed unusually excited and impulsive in the process.
Liberate? Ha! You're just ordinary Pokémon thieves! And what's more, you use those stolen Pokémon like they're tools!
  • Later, along the entire route from Castelia City to Nimbasa City, Hugh gets extremely angry. He also doesn't treat the Team Plasma grunts that have also been thieves in various places well. Hugh's obsession with becoming stronger also deepened.
  • However, just when the player was worried that Hugh would go down a path of evil, due to his obsession with becoming stronger, like all his former rivals did, an encounter with a Team Plasma grunt in Nimbasa changed everything. Hugh put his heart at ease, and confessed his feelings to the player...
Five years ago... Team Plasma stole my little sister's Purrloin. It had been given to her as a present. I was only a little kid... I couldn't do anything... So... So that's why I have to get stronger!
  • Team Plasma stole the Purrloin that Hugh's grandfather had left to Hugh and his sister. Since it was a relic from his late grandfather, having a special meaning, Hugh desperately tried to retrieve his Purrloin.
  • After this, Hugh was getting stronger as well, as well as coming across and interacting with other people (he also spat on Clay's behavior). Meanwhile, increased interaction with Team Plasma made Hugh realize they have "hidden intentions"...
  • The plot progresses to Driftveil City. Hugh asks a former Team Plasma grunt about the whereabouts of his Purrloin, to no avail. After the protagonist defeats Clay and gets the Driftveil Gym Badge, Hugh, Cheren, and the player board the Plasma Frigate after completing the Driftveil World Tournament, but they were thrown off the ship by the Shadow Triad.
  • When the protagonist completes the Gym challenge in Humilau City, Hugh and Marlon had a falling out due to their postures toward Team Plasma.[note 1] Hugh then proceeded to Route 22 to search for Team Plasma, and let the player split up. After the player discovers the Plasma Frigate in the Seaside Cave, Hugh will follow them, and when Marlon lowers the gangway, he will board the ship with the player, only to be thrown off the boat again.
  • After reaching the Giant Chasm, northeast of Lacunosa Town, Hugh will join the player in chasing Team Plasma, aided by former members such as Rood. Hugh's obsession with rescuing Purrloin touches Colress, who serves Team Plasma. Under the guidance of Colress, Hugh and the player finally encounter the Shadow Triad, and the captured Purrloin. However, what awaited Hugh was not a heartwarming reunion; instead, it was enough to make a youngster like Hugh break down completely...
If we let Team Plasma do whatever they want... there'll be more sad Pokémon like Purrloin and Kyurem...
  • During those five years, Purrloin had evolved into Liepard, and had completely forgotten about Hugh and his sister. Knowing the truth, Hugh broke down completely, unable to speak or fight for a while.
  • After Ghetsis and his new Team Plasma were defeated, Hugh will ask the player: "Is it over?". After that, he'll advise the player to go to the Victory Road, he himself will return to Aspertia City, returning the evolved Purrloin to his sister.
Thanks to you, I have accomplished what I set out to do during my journey! I wish I could've shown you my little sister's huge smile!
  • After the player reaches the end of the Victory Road, before they leave, Hugh has one final battle with the player.

Notes and references

  1. Marlon was relatively tolerant of Team Plasma. He is not averse to them, per se, it's just because people are disgusted at them. it's only then that he steps in to help the protagonist defeat Team Plasma. He did it for reasons other than for himself. It also had to do with the fact that Huimlau City was left intact when Team Plasma caused trouble in Unova two years ago.
