Luigi (Japanese: ルイージ) is a character in the Mario series of games developed by Nintendo, he was created by Shigeru Miyamoto. His first appearance was in the NES game Super Mario Bros., the first game with him as the main character was Mario is Missing!.

Character history

Luigi started out as a character for the player to take on the role of Player 2. In order to save memory, the developers only changed Mario's color palette to create Luigi, therefore, in some old Mario material, he looked similar to Mario. In many games, to distinguish the two, Luigi's jumping power is stronger than Mario but he slips easily.

Later, Luigi was differentiated from Mario by making him taller and leaner, and also having a straight mustache (Mario has a curly mustache), and making him more introverted and shier than Mario. Perhaps because of this, he is strongly attached to Mario.

He is the main character of the Luigi's Mansion series.

Relationships

  • With Mario: They are very close as brothers. But in games featuring karting or some other sport, Luigi sometimes shows a competitive mind towards him as well.
  • With Bowser: Luigi also fought with Bowser, but Bowser doesn't seem to care much about Luigi, and even forgets his name sometimes.
  • With Princess Peach: Because he is Mario's brother, he and Peach also have some kind of friendship.
  • With Princess Daisy: Daisy often appears as Luigi's partner, contrasting Peach's relationship with Mario. Based on recent works, it seems the two have a good relationship with each other.

Official activities

The Year of Luigi

2013 marked the 30th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros.. Nintendo officially established the year as the "Year of Luigi", and announced some Luigi activities and games featuring Luigi as the main character:

  • For Nintendo 3DS:
    • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
    • Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
  • For Wii U:
    • New Super Luigi U

In fan culture

Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing

Originally from a series of Super Smash Bros. and Mario Party videos on YouTube, in which Luigi didn't move a muscle, but caused his opponent to lose because of the various mechanisms in the levels.

Luigi's death stare

From Mario Kart 8, Luigi used items to overtake other players after looking at that player's action. The image of Luigi turning back with an angry face is used to give the effect of "using items to spoil other players after looking at their Luigi".

Mama Luigi

From the episode "Mama Luigi" in the cartoon Super Mario World, because there is a lot of laughable lines in that sentence, it is often parodied by foreign fans.
