A magician, also known as mage, is a professional identity and a moe point in the ACG subculture.

Introduction

"Magician" is the broadest general term for people who possess magic. It mainly refers to those who can cause supernatural phenomena (magic) through spells for attack, defense, treatment, assistance, and other multi-purpose occupations. "Magician" is occasionally used as a synonym for a person with superpowers or a user of magic-like weapons.

Mages in ACGN works

In the professional settings of various ACGN works, magician is a common basic profession.

In ACG works, magicians are sometimes divided into several levels in order to express their level of cultivation.

The divisions in different works are different. Low-level magicians include magic apprentices, trainee magicians, etc., while high-level magicians include magisters, etc.; there are several intermediate levels in between.

From the perspective of cultivation direction, magicians are usually divided into multiple branches, such as elementalists, summoners, necromancers, etc. In many Western works, they are usually divided into two types: witches and wizards. Witches mainly use elemental magic, using elements (or creations) such as wind, water, fire, earth, and light in nature to perform magic, while wizards mainly use dark magic and undead magic, forming an opposition between light and darkness. Summoning is not divided separately. Wizards and witches both have summoning skills. In recent ACGN works, the magic factions practiced by mages no longer distinguish between men and women.

In addition, Japanese media merged the concepts of witch and mage, and created the majokko/magical girl, which is a female magician with the image of a young girl.

The main weapons of magicians include magic wands, one-handed blunt weapons, short knives, swords, etc. Some magicians will choose to use their bare hands to facilitate the casting of spells; in terms of armor, they mainly include cloth and robes (a few magicians and warriors can wear light and heavy armor), these can be paired with shields; special equipment can be paired with spellbooks, crystal balls and other special magic weapons.

Magicians have higher requirements for spiritual abilities (such as intelligence, wisdom, or collectively spirituality). In many works, the beginner magician is easily in danger when being besieged due to his weak physical defense. After gradually mastering range attack magic, the magician becomes the main magic damage output role in the team.

Mages in TRPGs

In DND, the Mage is a branch of the Wizard.

In World of Darkness, mages are one of the three major product lines, the other two being vampires and werewolves.

Different versions of mages

Depending on the original text, "magician" in fantasy, according to human cognition, can mean "mage", "wizard", "sorcerer", "warlock", or "witch".

The difference between these words is:

  • Mage: It is the most neutral term. The original word Magu means wise man. The word Magi has the same origin as its etymology. Also a more neutral word to describe magic.
  • Wizard: The etymology Wise means wisdom, and for the most part has exactly the same meaning as mage (see its page for differences). Some places use it as the wizard's counterpart to the witch.
  • Sorcerer comes from "sorcery", meaning evil magic, its etymology is from the medieval French Sorcerie, which means sorcery, and its etymology is from the Latin Sors, which means fate. Its usage is similar to the word wizard, but the sorcerer is more evil but not always like the warlock. In the context of TRPGs, a sorcerer is described as a spellcaster who casts spells with talents.
*Warlock: The original word Wǣrloga means oathbreaker, liar, traitor, and devil, so it is an evil sorcerer related to the devil, and is often used as a wizard corresponding to a witch.
  • Witch: The original word Wicce means evil female sorcerer , and when its etymology Wicca means evil male sorcerer, it is a wizard.
