Military science fiction is a subgenre of science fiction, characterized by the use of science fiction technology and weapons to fight. The protagonist is a soldier and participates in science fiction battles. The battlefields sometimes take place in space, alien planets, or even other worlds.
The description of conflict, the weapons used in warfare, the role of the military, and the status of its members form the basis of military science fiction. However, many military science fiction will use elements of modern or past wars and make simple replacements, such as replacing "battleship" with "star ship", "country" with "planet", and "knights" and "soldiers" with "space fighter pilots" and so on.
Most military science fiction describes war from the perspective of soldiers, emphasizing traditional military values such as brotherhood, bravery, sacrifice and responsibility. In most cases, the settings will have weapons that are more advanced than real ones, but there are also weapons that are based on already-existing models, but the worldview in which they are used has changed dramatically. Although advanced technology may be a clue in military science fiction, in most cases, the protagonist often wins by relying on wisdom and courage rather than technology.
Military science fiction sometimes overlaps with the space opera and the techno-thriller.
The earliest military science fiction novels mainly described wars in the future, such as George Chesney's The Battle of Dorking in 1871. HG Wells' The War of the Worlds focused the story on intergalactic warfare, setting a precedent for later generations. Eventually, military science fiction was gradually defined as an independent genre. Robert Heinlein's 1959 novel Starship Troopers is another well-known military science fiction novel.
After the Vietnam War, some retired veterans used their combat experience to participate in the creation of military science fiction, which led to an upsurge in the creation of this genre. Today, military science fiction has become a very influential subgenre of science fiction.
