Mecha (Japanese: メカ) often appear in various science fiction works, and similar equipment occasionally appears in some fantasy works.

The military unit whose main mission is to man the mecha is usually called "mecha pilot". Exoskeleton armor is also a type of mecha, but its size and configuration are very different from that of general mechas, so it will not be discussed here.

Overview

The term "mecha" can actually mean different things. From exoskeleton armor, to walking machines, to humanoid ones like Gundam, they all fall into the category of mechas. However, no matter how they are explained, these vehicles usually have one thing in common: they rely on highly flexible robotic arms and legs to move and complete corresponding tasks. Therefore, although vehicles, ships and various aircraft also meet the definitions of "mechanical" and "armored", they are not mechas. In contrast, even if mechas use wheel propulsion, propellers, or jet propulsion, they are still mecha.

In fact, it is not difficult to find that the mecha is essentially a "manned robot". The difference is that the mecha has a cockpit, which must be operated by the pilot. Although it also has a computer system for control, it only plays an assistive role. Of course, there are also opinions that advocate classifying robots as drones, such as the battle robots in "Star Wars", the military mechas in "Girls Frontline", etc.

The mechas in ACGN works are usually military equipment, and some are active as civilian equipment in places such as construction sites or disaster scenes.

It is now generally believed among military enthusiasts that individual mechanical exoskeletons will definitely appear in the future (China, the United States, and Russia have already conducted research on it). However, even if heavy-duty mechas as heavy weapons appear in the future, due to material and energy constraints, currently, it's a waste of lives on the battlefield. After all, the price-performance ratio is not as good as that of tanks, aircraft and other equipment.

The mechas in ACGN will include humanoid, four-legged, eight-legged and other multi-legged types. There will be very hard-core types, and there will also be bionic, magical looking ones...

In reality, someone has made a 1:1 mecha, but it is extremely bulky and has poor maneuverability, so it is basically a standing corpse.

Appearing in ACGN works

As a plot element

  • Mobile suits, such as Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam series)
  • Mantis (Halo)
  • The Metal Gears (Metal Gear series)
  • Titans (Titanfall)
  • GIGA Queen (Deltarune)
  • The Zords (Super Sentai and its adaptation Power Rangers)

As drivable vehicles

  • Metal Gear: Metal Gears
  • Overwatch: Heroes D.Va and Wrecking Ball will drive mecha.
