"Caramelldansen" is a bubblegum dance song by the Swedish band Caramell.
Popularity
Initially, Caramelldansen was only popular as a dance song in some European countries, yet to make its mark in Asian otaku culture.
The origin of the song's boom is that a certain otaku in Germany used "Caramelldansen" in a MAD animation using anime materials he had collected over the past fife years.
This MAD was composed of many short clips, the most eye-catching of which is the one that appeared at the 2:17 mark, in the opening of the adult game Popotan, where the characters Mai and Mii appear, putting their hands on their heads swinging them like cat claws or bunny ears, and twisting their waist at the same time, with a smile on their faces.
Later, a Japanese netizen cut out this short clip and looped it.
In fact, as early as 2003, during the broadcast of the anime adaptation of Popotan, someone made a GIF of the dancing scene of Mai and Mii in the opening, but it did not arouse much interest at the time.

According to an English blog, the earliest relevant discussion on the English internet about Caramelldansen appeared on November 14, 2003. The Popotan GIF first appeared on July 10, 2004, and was spread to a small extent from early 2005 to early 2006. In the first half of 2006, DJ Speedycake created a sped-up version of Caramelldansen, which is the version that started the fad. Sven from Sweden combined the adapted song with animated graphics and posted it on the forum 4chan, which became the original version that became popular later. The earliest Caramelldansen meme video on Japan's Niconico was a fanmade video, uploaded on July 29, 2007, but it had not yet become popular on a large scale. The original video was uploaded to Niconico at the end of 2007, and its large-scale popularity had to wait until a version using footage of the game THE iDOLM@STER in February 2008. |
Since then, various versions of the Caramelldansen meme have emerged, which have become popular in the ACG cultural circles and the Internet, with dance covers as well. Their popularity is no less than that of Ievan Polkka.
Nowadays, the most commonly used version of "Caramelldansen" on the internet is the version that has been sped-up by 1.2 (the original E-flat major was changed to F-sharp major), which has a stronger rhythm and tempo.
