Nihon Falcom Corporation (日本ファルコン有限会社) is a video game company based in Tachikawa, Tokyo, Japan. Currently, its main product is video game software. Its representative works include the Ys, Legend of Heroes, and Trails series.

History

It was founded in March 1981 by Masayuki Kato. Originally, it was founded as a distributor of Apple computers in Japan. The "Fal" in the name was derived from the USS Falcon in the Star Trek series, while the "com" was a shortening of "computer".

Falcom was once a top tier manufacturer in the 80s, but in the early 90s there was a dilemma of no new work, surviving the period of the mid-to-late 90s and early 2000s with remastered games. The games division was spun off as a separate company in 2001, becoming "Nihon Falcom Corporation", and was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2003.

In 2006, due to the downturn in the global PC gaming market, Falcom decided to shift the focus of its work to consoles. This was followed by the hugely successful PSP version of Trails in the Sky, taking over the first and second places of the Yahoo Game Satisfaction Rankings, it has also allowed Falcom to gain a lot of support from gamers.

Falcom today is a very small company, however, it is still labeled in the Japanese game industry as a "talent cultivation base". Tetsuya Takahashi and Makoto Shinkai used to work at Falcom. Oftentimes, an employee has to juggle multiple jobs at the same time, for example, Makoto Shinkai was in charge of programming, artwork, animation, and PV production, and even had a cameo in a game.
