Introduction

Lizard

"Lizard" is a common name given to a large group of animals in the Lacertilia suborder of the Squamata order. Lizards, geckos and skinks are part of this group. Lizards, in the particular sense, refers to members of this suborder that are quadrupeds. In particular, the family Lacertidae.

Lizards are a large group in the Reptilia class, the shape and size of different lizards varies greatly. The smallest is only 2cm tall, and the largest, the Komodo dragon, can reach 2.5m. Most lizards are quadrupeds, there are others that aren't (e.g. the Anguidae family, which look like snakes, but are actually legless lizards).

A lizard's body is covered with scales, is very elongated, has a long tail, the tongue is well-developed and flattened; it has eyes with movable eyelids and transient membranes, most have external ear holes.

Most lizards are terrestrial, a few are also arboreal, semi-aquatic or subterranean. The vast majority of lizards are non-venomous, only a few species are poisonous.

Lizards are widely distributed in all continents, except Antarctica. They mainly live in the forests, plains, mountains, and deserts of the tropics, subtropics, and temperate zones.

Lizards and human culture

  • Some people keep lizards as pets; lizards, geckos and chameleons are available as pets.
  • Some lizards prey on large species of pests, and they are beneficial to humans. (For example, geckos will prey on flies, mosquitoes and other harmful insects)
  • A reptilian is a race common to science fiction and fantasy, which resembles a humanoid lizard.
  • The tsuchinoko, a creature in Japanese legend, is probably based on a lizard (like the blue-tongued skink, or a legless lizard such as the slow worm, etc.).
  • The Basilisk, a creature in Western mythology is mostly represented as a giant lizard.
  • The suction capacity of the gecko's feet and the color-changing ability of the chameleon's skin are subjects for human bionics research.
  • In ancient China, geckos mashed together with cinnabar are made into "gecko sand".
  • The dried body of geckos is used in Chinese medicine, for tonifying lungs and benefiting the kidneys.
  • Geckos are what Chinese people traditionally call one of the "Five Poisons" (the other four are snakes, toads, centipedes and scorpions). However, compared to the other four, geckos do not embody the "poison" aspect that much, causing them to be replaced with spiders in literature.
  • In Central America (Nicaragua), people consume lizards as food.
