Introduction

Red panda

The person who first named the red panda was the French zoologist Fréderic Cuvier. Based on the red panda's cat-like appearance, he named its genus Ailurus (which means "cat" in ancient Greek). At first, in English, the red panda was just called "panda". The word possibly originates from the Nepalese ponya ("bamboo eater").
