The ferret is an animal in the Martes genus of the Mustelidae family, a subspecies of the European polecat.

Ferrets are slender in stature, with short limbs. Their fur color can be white, light gray, brown, or a mix of those colors, the tip of its tail is black. Its head is triangular in shape, its ears are short and curved. It has very long whiskers on either side of the mouth.

Ferrets are agile animals. As carnivores, they eat mostly a variety of rodents, rabbits and pheasants, small birds, and insects. Ferrets digest and metabolize quickly, so their feeding cycle is short. Ferrets have no sweat glands, and have poor resistance to heat. Ferrets also have poor eyesight. Ferrets have a pair of odor glands, and they emit a foul odor when in danger.
