Introduction
Woodpecker
"Woodpecker" is the name given to some or all of the commmon animals in the Picidae family of the Piciformes order. Especially the Picinae and Picumninae subfamilies.
Woodpeckers are arboreal climbers, small or medium-sized birds, with a sharp, long beak, which can be used to peck away wood or bark; woodpeckers also have retractable tongues, they are able to stretch them out for a long period of time, the tip also bears a short structure. The structure of the peck and tongue is well suited to prey on insects that hide within trees. Woodpeckers also nest inside dead trees. Woodpeckers spend most of their lives pecking away at the bark of trees, special brain and eye physiology prevents them from being damaged by the shock of prolonged wood-pecking.
Woodpeckers and human culture
- Woodpeckers are ornamental birds in forests, groves, and nature reserves.
- The hoopoe, a similar sharp and long-billed bird, is often mistaken for a woodpecker by the uninitiated.
