Introduction

Lizard

"Lizard" is a common name given to a large group of animals in the Lacertilia suborder of the Squamata order. Lizards, geckos and skinks are part of this group. Lizards, in the particular sense, refers to members of this suborder that are quadrupeds. In particular, the family Lacertidae.

Lizards are a large group in the Reptilia class, the shape and size of different lizards varies greatly. The smallest is only 2cm tall, and the largest, the Komodo dragon, can reach 2.5m. Most lizards are quadrupeds, there are others that aren't (e.g. the Anguidae family, which look like snakes, but are actually legless lizards).

A lizard's body is covered with scales, is very elongated, has a long tail, the tongue is well-developed and flattened; it has eyes with movable eyelids and transient membranes, most have external ear holes.

Most lizards are terrestrial, a few are also arboreal, semi-aquatic or subterranean. The vast majority of lizards are non-venomous, only a few species are poisonous.

Lizards are widely distributed in all continents, except Antarctica. They mainly live in the forests, plains, mountains, and deserts of the tropics, subtropics, and temperate zones.
