Introduction

Crab

"Crab" is a generic term for some or all animals in the Brachyura suborder (mainly short-tailed or crooked-tailed). There are about 4,700 species of short-tailed and crooked-tailed crabs. There's a huge variation in size between crabs, the largest is the Gann mitten crab, with a leg span of up to 4 meters, and the smallest, the bean crab, is only a few millimeters long.

Crabs have a long history, having been around since the Jurassic period. The crab has five pairs of legs, the first pair are pincer-like claws, the last pair are paddle-shaped swimmer's feet, and the three middle pairs are pointed feet. The body is flattened and encased in a carapace. They have small eyes, located on a pair of eye stalks, able to stretch freely. They have two pairs of tentacles. The crab has a distinctive "tail" when it's young, and it curls under the abdominal breast plate when the crab is an adult.

Crabs and human culture

  • Most crabs are edible, human consumption of crabs has a long history. Crab fishing or captive breeding is also an important industry.
  • In psychology, crab mentality is metaphorical slang for the belief of "If I didn't have it, you can't have it either". Originating from a bucket full or crabs, although the crabs could easily escape the bucket, the other crabs would grab onto each other to prevent the other from doing so. It also extends to the object of pulling down beyond oneself, this is used to negate and diminish the behavior of the other party.
