Introduction
Tanuki
The tanuki, commonly known as the raccoon dog, is a kind of wild animal in the Canidae family of the order Carnivora.
Tanuki are native to eastern Asia and is distributed in China, North Korea, Japan, and Russia. It was introduced to Europe as an invasive species in modern times.
The tanuki is omnivorous, and unlike most canids, the raccoon dog is good at climbing trees and hibernates in winter.
The tanuki is very similar in appearance to the raccoon and the lesser (red) panda. In fact, these three animals belong to three different families, and the differences are obvious.
Translation problems
When translating tanuki from Japanese, the current commonly used translation is "raccoon dog", but tanuki are not the same as raccoons.
Tanuki and human culture
- The tanuki is often raised as a fur animal, and its fur is called tanuki velvet.
- Some people keep tanuki as pets.
- Tanuki a very unique position in Japanese culture. In Japanese legend, tanuki have the ability to transform, and will put a leaf on its head to change into various forms. In addition, the Japanese also believe that tanuki and kitsune (fox) are enemies, and conflicts between tanuki and kitsune often appear in ACG works.
