Introduction
Leo is the prince of Planet L77. Because his home planet was destroyed by an army of Alien Magma, the members of his kind, including his parents, all died, the whereabouts of his younger brother Astra were unknown, and only he himself survived, taking Earth as his new home.
Leo disguised himself as a human named Gen Otori. Originally the coach of the Jounan Sports Club, he came to help Ultraseven when he was struggling with an Alien Magma and its twin monsters, and later joined the MAC team at the invitation of Dan to protect the Earth in his place, as Dan lost his ability to transform due to an injury, and trained hard under his wing.
He transforms into Leo using a ring he wears on his right hand. Later, Leo and Astra defeated Alien Babarue together, saved the Star of Ultra from crashing onto Earth, and officially became a member of the Ultra Brothers. After MAC was dissolved, he stayed in the house of Nurse Miyama, and continued to fight against the Saucer Monsters sent by Black Star with his own strength. Finally, after destroying all the Saucer Monsters, he recognized the Earth as his second home, and traveled around on a sailboat.
Many years later, he was entrusted by Ultraseven to take his son Zero as his apprentice. He secretly trained Zero for a period of time on Planet K76, successfully taught him his martial arts and trained Zero into a qualified Ultra Warrior through high-intensity training.
Details
- He is the first Ultra to come from outside the M78 Nebula.
- Leo was trained by Ultraseven, and gradually became an Ultra Warrior considered to be a master of Space Martial Arts. Possessing an ability far superior to other Ultra Warriors (the Ultra Brothers' physical strength, first in fighting), he makes up for his short activity time and insufficient beam techniques (low budget) with his excellent fighting skills.
- Leo has a number of beam techniques which rival those of Ace in canon, but in the TV series, due to a low budget and other reasons, he didn't use them.
- Leo was stationed as being "an Ultra Brother with not very good Beam Techniques". His top technique, the Energy Light Ball, was not very effective early in the series, instead, Leo often defeated opponents with the Leo Kick. But in the later episodes, the Energy Light Ball already has a one-hit kill effect against Saucer Monsters.
- His name is taken from the Leo constellation.
- The symbol on Leo's abdomen is his Ultra Sign. It is the tradition for L77 Ultras to have their Ultra Signs marked on their abdomen. His younger brother Astra also has it.
- The plot of Episodes 1 and 2 of the TV series is a tribute to the popular novel "Japan Sinks" at the time. The plot of Chapters 1 and 2 is the true portrayal of "Japan Sinks".
- The TV series is roughly divided into three parts: the first part is the training chapter, which mainly tells the story of Leo's training and growth; the second part is called "Japan Masterpiece Folklore", and focuses on Leo's fight against various enemies based on myths and legends; the third part, "Terror of the Saucer Race", tells the story of Leo's fight against the Saucer Monsters.
- Leo is very different from the previous Ultras. He rarely uses Beam Techniques in battle, and almost every time he uses his fists to defeat the enemy.
- In the "Saucer Monster" story arc, with the arrival of the Saucer Monsters, which possessed strong resistance ability, Leo increased the frequency of using beam techniques.
