Cheng Lihua is a character in the science-fiction The Three-Body Problem written by Liu Cixin and the derivative works.
Introduction
Military representatives of the military-run prosecutor's office during the Cultural Revolution, had the power to sway the outcome of trials.
Background
In the seventh section of The Three-Body Problem, "The Madness Years", Ye Wenjie goes to the Inner Mongolia Production and Construction Corps to participate in forest cutting in the Daxing'anling after his father, Ye Zhetai, is criticized and killed.
In the eighth section of The Three-Body Problem, "Silent Spring", the banned book Silent Spring In an interview with Daxing'anling, the in-house translator of Bai Mulin expresses his concern about indiscriminate logging by the Production and Construction Corps, a concern that is shared by Ye Wenjie. The descriptions of human evil in Silent Spring inspired Ye Wenjie's doubts about human moral self-consciousness, which defined her life. Thereafter, Bai Mulin was ready to write a letter to the central government in order to warn it that the great reclamation of the production and construction corps would have serious consequences. At this time, however, he was unable to write properly because his hands were shaking more than once from using the chainsaw. Although some suspect a deliberate frame-up, the author denies it in the original. This is when Ye Wenjie offered to transcribe the letter for Bai Mulin, laying the groundwork for the subsequent investigation.
After the letter was sent, the sender was immediately investigated by the Political Department. Since the letter was in Ye Wenjie's handwriting, Bai Mulin claimed that he only helped Ye Wenjie to send the letter, which caused Ye Wenjie to be investigated.
During Ye Wenjie's investigation, Cheng Lihua, as a military representative of the Military Management Committee of the Intermediate Court, had the power to sway the court's decision. She attempted to draw closer to Ye Wenjie by caring for her, and then lured Ye Wenjie to sign the document to confirm the prosecution of Ye Zhetai, which was refused by Ye Wenjie. At this point, Cheng Lihua tore off her hypocritical mask and threw a bucket of water for washing onto Ye Wenjie, causing her to suffer from the cold in the harsh winter in Inner Mongolia.
Character evaluation
Cheng Lihua, as a military representative of the officer's prosecutor's office, pretends to care about Ye Wenjie, so as to fulfill her purpose of framing Ye Zhetai. Instead of framing Ye Wenjie, she speaks ill of him, reflecting the political sensitivity and social turmoil of the time. When Ye Wenjie got the idea that "it is impossible for human beings to perfect themselves through moral consciousness" from Silent Spring, she proved Ye Wenjie's idea from her practical actions. This not only objectively pushed Ye Wenjie to participate in the "Red Coast Project", but also subjectively established Ye Wenjie's dedication to communicating with aliens and changing the "dark status quo" of the Earth. ultimately causing the destruction of two worlds
