After Sophon disrupted the accelerator on the earthand discovered the secrets of her mother Ye Wenjie and the Trisolaran world, she came to the conclusion that physics did not exist, and committed suicide by taking sleeping pills at home two days before the story happened.

Suicide note written on birch bark

All the evidence points to a single conclusion: Physics has never existed, and will never exist. I know what I'm doing is irresponsible. But I have no choice.

Although there are few places where Yang Dong is described in the novel, Yang Dong appears in all books of ‘’The Three-Body Problem’’ trilogy. Her thoughts and experiences run through the whole work and become a dark line in the ‘’The Three-Body Problem’’ series.

Birthday suspicion

Yang Dong was actually born in 1981 and was 26 years old when he committed suicide in 2007.

In the autumn of 1971, Ye Wenjie first used the amplification effect of the sun's radio waves to send signals to space, the specific time being set in October 1971. After the Trisolarans received it, even if the listener did not delay in the middle, immediately returned, it took 8 years and 7 months (Alpha Centauri is 4.3 light-years away from Earth, the one-way communication time at the speed of light is about 4 years and 3 months or more). It must have been after May 1980 when Ye Wenjie received the "Do not answer" message from the Trisolaran listener. At the same time as she received the message, Ye Wenjie killed Lei Zhicheng and Yang Weining, and the doctor found out that she was pregnant. (1979 in the original work, there is a problem with the time calculation here)

Ye Wenjie went into labor 8 months later, which would be January 1981. If we calculate according to this timeline, she was only 26 years old when she died.

  1. It is written in the table of era in the third book, she was born in 1979, and committed suicide in 2007.
