Kemonomimi (Japanese: 獣耳, けものみみ) is a general term for a large category of ear shapes, and they are also a moe point in ACG subculture.

Kemonomimi is an extension of cat ears (nekomimi). It is a large concept and is a general term that includes many types of ear shapes. About the more common kemonomimi such as cat ears and rabbit ears, please see the corresponding articles.

Introduction

Kemonomimi is a general term for animal ears of characters with animal characteristics, including the more common cat ears, dog ears, rabbit ears, and other less common types of ears. Typically, animal ears will appear along with an animal tail, just as a cat will have both ears and a tail.

Under certain conditions, the animal ears will be defined as sensitive points on the character's body. As long as they are lightly or accidentally touched, various reactions that everyone likes to see will occur. But of course, in this case it would not be the headgear-like kemonomimi, but the native animal-like ears.

Classification of kemonomimi

According to the cause

  • Native type: The character itself is a beastman, a furry, or a humanoid yōkai such as a nekomata. The ears are inherent to themself. Generally speaking, it can feel the ears and can control their movement.
  • Acquired type: The character did not originally have animal ears, but grew them due to magic/human experiments, etc. Whether the character can control the animal ears basically depends on the work, and there is no unified description.
  • Headgear type: This character does not originally have animal ears, but wears animal ear-type headgear, so they have animal ears in appearance. In most cases, they cannot control the ears.

According to the category

  • Related variants of real-life animals, such as dog ears, cat ears, rabbit ears, and fox ears.
  • Related variants of fictional creatures, or the beastmen in the fictional world.
