Bhikkhuni is a term used to refer to a female Buddhist monk who has taken the full precepts, however, it can sometimes be generalized to refer to all Buddhist nuns.
Generally, bhikkhuni shave their heads, and are dressed in monk's robes, monk's shoes and surplices, but recently, some of them in Japan did not need to shave their heads. In Catholicism and Christianity, bhikkhuni is another term for nun (it could also refer to nurses). Some bhikkhuni did not observe the rules of purity, or were devoted to preaching or helping the poor and the weak. Instead, they made deals for money or power with wealthy men, that's why the general public had degraded their noble status.
In Japanese ACG works, the number of moegirls who are bhikkhuni is small. One of the more famous is Byakuren Hijiri from the Touhou Project series.
