Gyaru (Japanese: ギャル) is derived from the English slang word Gal, which refers to a female character who is sensitive to fashion trends and develops fashion trends together with them. It is also a moe point in ACG subculture.

Introduction

In the 1970s, Japanese pop culture exploded with Shibuya as the center, and the girls who were at the forefront were known as "hot girls."

During the bubble economy, the word once referred to young women, and many related terms were derived from it. The word "galgame" also originated from this period.

In the late 1990s, based on the dressing style of the well-known singer Namie Amuro, the "Amuro style" of early gyaru culture, which is the most important was fixed in thick-soled boots, dark brown curly hair, long stockings, heavy eye shadow and false eyelashes, and the image of skin painted into being wheat-colored and carrying the characteristic items of a gyaru is also a well-known culture to this day.

As popular culture continues to develop, younger versions called kogyaru are also emerging and have become the main force of gyaru. Even elementary and junior high school students in the metropolitan area will participate.

The golden age of hot girls was between the 1990s and the 2000s. Garage (ガラケー) and Tamagotchi were both representative products of that era.

There are many gyaru-themed fashion magazines, and one of them called "Little Devil Ageha" even spawned a new fashion style.

The new gyaru style derived from the Reiwa era was also called "Reiwa gyaru".
