Overview
The bō, a large wooden stick, is probably the earliest close-combat cold weapon in human history. Primitive societies used wooden sticks and stones to fight among tribes, probably the earliest fighting "weapons" other than physical combat.
Bō are blunt instruments, not cut by sharp edges, rather, it relies on the kinetic energy generated when swinging to produce striking damage to the target. So, generally speaking, bō require certain amount of mass to produce enough attack power, and considering the strength and flexibility of the wielder, the mass should not be too large either.
Staffs and bō
If a strict distinction is to be made, the staff and the bō are not the same weapon. The staff has no handle end (grip end) and no attack end, can be held in any position while attacking (or hold the middle part, used as a double-headed weapon); the bō has one end as the grip end (usually thinner), the other end is the attack end (usually thicker), the focus is on the attack end.
